Like a phoenix from the flames...

IT'S ALIIIIIVE!

Like the proverbial phoenix rising from the flames, I return to blog again.

So, a long time has passed since I've added to this blog. The last post is September 2010...wow, 4 years. A lot has happened in that 4 years. I've finally finished my PhD, pending corrections, moved back to Manchester, and have now got a job working for a few weeks with KP in Switzerland. This is to document some of my thoughts, feelings and interests as I move from the world of jobless student-dom into the world of work.

The return to blogging is also inspired by my friend Georgia's blog of her journey to Iceland to begin her Master's in Biology there (http://georgiasadventures.wordpress.com/2014/09/05/preparing-to-move-to-iceland/).

This blog, when I remember to write stuff, will chart some of the things I get up to as I commence a new job in a foreign country.

This all came about very quickly. KP (present in some of the photos from the pub crawl, way back) asked if I wanted to work in Switzerland for a little while, with his employer, Selfrag, a start up company working on the electrical breakage of rocks for the mining and other industries. After a little umm-ing and ahhi-ng I decided to go.

The first step was finding a room. KP sent me links to WGZimmer, a swiss house/flat sharing website, for those looking for room mates and lodgers etc. I emailed several people, looking for a room, but none responded. When I made my own advertisement to stay in Kerzers, the small town Selfrag is situated in, I had a response within a day!

Accommodation was agreed upon, and I booked flights, travelling over on Friday 5th Sept, at 8am (meaning a 5am start), landing in Geneva at 11am local time.

Next was the train. Thankfully, the information and ticket desk's attendants spoke english and I got a ticket from Geneva to Kerzers, single for 51CHF (swiss francs), about £35 for a 2 hour journey, on par with the UK's ridiculous rail prices.

In the meantime, as a reward for making it through that text, enjoy some views from the train window:

The view from the train from Geneva to Kerzers

All the streetlights in Switzerland are wonky, its something to do with a royal decree.

Vineyards?

My landlady, Kathrin, thankfully picked me up at Kerzers station, and walked me to the new abode, on Wolfackerstraasen, or Wolf acre street, apparently so called as wolves used to live here.

Catering for myself is the next issue, and I'll have to navigate my way through the (small) town, using my bastardised german-french-english hybrid language that I recall from High School.

It's going to be interesting.

Oh, and one more thing, like England, Switzerland has different plug sockets to the rest of Europe, meaning your continental travel adapters won't work here, unless they specifically say they do. Next stop, UK-Swiss adapterville!

Delays, Delays, Delays..

So, after an excellent saturday in Bristol at the pleasure of Zoe, my train to Truro terminated at Plymouth, apparently due to the train in front being broken. Doesnt make much sense, really, but Luckily, I have some friends to keep me company while I wait for the next train...

The Real Ale Trail- The Boslowick Inn

A friendly, homely bar,a bit out of the way from fal/ryn, so you wont see too many students. Stocking courage ales, the directors is quite nice. Also serves sunday lunch, and the smells from the pub means gt would taste prettzg good! Xen.

Ooh, spooky trees

Yea, that'7 right

Real ail rail trail- the famous barrel

Ok pub, with a huge barrel for a door! Decent pint of sharps, well lit pool table, Nice beer garden, but an average pub overall

Real Ale Rail Trail- The Kings Arms

Ive realised after seven pints that Jim is an incredible beauty, and I want his babierp. Or so he says. Ok pub, lots of room in the back with a random, interesting selection of ales, the St Pirans is decent.

Real Ale Rail Trail - The Three Tuns

And to the first pub in Penryn! Strangely, no draft ales on, only Admiral Ale bottled. Had to settle for a pint of Guinness. The Tuns is better during term time with uni students around!
